Chapter Three
I pushed myself off of Luke and stood up. I once again offered him my hand and he took it. This time he was able to stand without falling.
I glanced around the room at all of the bubbles. “Oh God… I’m like the worst house cleaner ever.”
Luke laughed and grabbed a broom from the corner of the room. “Don’t worry about. It’s not the first time it’s happened.”
I looked at him surprised. “Really?”
He smiled. “Oh yeah - we’ve all done it.” He said with a smirk.
I narrowed my eyes at him. “You’re bluffing.”
He laughed again. “Ok, you caught me. You’re the only one who’s ever had the honor of saying they flooded the laundry room.” He said smiling. “I was just trying to make you feel better.”
“Yeah - that doesn’t make me feel better at all.” I said laughing.
Luke smiled and started to sweep the bubbles out onto the patio outside the door. “Hey, I think there’s a mop out in the garage. Would you mind going to get it?”
“That’s what I’m here for.” I said turning and walked towards the garage. I was almost there when Shaun came from around the corner and completely ran into me. I stumbled backwards but he steadied me with his arms.
“Whoa - what happened to you?” he said noticing that I was covered in bubbles and water.
“I got in a fight with the washing machine.” I said. “Clearly… the machine won.”
Shaun smiled at me and chuckled a laugh. Another boy came running around the corner and Shaun reached out and grabbed him before he could run into either of us.
“HEY!” the younger boy yelled.
“Watch where you’re going, Liam” Shaun said sternly.
I scoffed. “You’re one to talk.”
He looked back at me with a smile and laughed.
“Shaun…” Liam said tugging on Shaun’s shirt.
“What?”
Liam motioned for Shaun to come closer to Liam - almost as if to tell him a secret.
“What is it?” Shaun said bobbing down so that he was eye level with Liam.
Liam looked at me and then back to Shaun “I see boobies.”
Shaun’s eyes got wide. I gasped and looked down at myself. Liam was right - there were the two girls in plain sight. Damn that washing machine. And damn me for wearing a thin white shirt. I immediately crossed my arms across my chest.
Shaun stood up slowly. “Um… I can go grab you another shirt if you want to borrow one of mine.” He said blushing.
I nodded my head. “That’d be great.” I said a little too quickly.
He stood there for a moment unsure of what to do. I stood looking at him and waited for him to make a move.
“Right. Shirt.” He said and pointed towards the stairs. He grabbed Liam’s and Luke’s shirt and they all walked away.
I brought my hand up to my forehead and slapped it.
After I retrieved the mop from the garage and switched shirts (I was now donning a black overshized shirt that read ‘i love aNdY’ on it), I headed back into the laundry room. Shaun was still working away at removing all of the bubbles.
“I can do this you know - I mean I made the mess.” I said embarrassed. “Plus, it’s sort of my job.”
Shaun turned to look at me. “Nah, it’s ok. I don’t mind.” He said and smiled at me.
I nodded. “Ok, well thanks for the help. I mean who knew unplugging the washing machine would turn it off.”
“Yeah, who knew?” He said playfully.
“Ok - I was in like, SEVERE panic mode. I wasn’t thinking straight.” I said laughing with him. I stared at him as he attempted to sweep the bubbles out. It wasn’t really working. Instead, the bubbles were just being swept up into the air and landing in various spots around the room.
“Step aside rookie.” I said pushing him out of the way and began to mop up the excess water.
“Rookie, huh?” he said with a smirk. “Who do you think was cleaning this house before you came along?”
I stared at him. “Probably your mum.”
He smiled. “Yeah… you’re right.” He said blushing.
I scooped up a few bubbles in my hand and blew them towards Shaun.
“Ah - I see how it is.” He said and kicked some bubbles up at me.
I playfully screamed and the two of us began an intense bubble fight.
“IT’S SNOWING IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM! HELL YEAH!”
Shaun and I both turned and looked at the doorway to see Liam standing there looking like a kid on Christmas morning.
Liam took off sprinting and dove into the huge mess sending more bubbles flying in the air. I looked at Shaun and the two of us broke out in a fit of laughter.
“His Acturly 15. don’t let his childhood dreams think you otherwise.”
After Shaun and I successfully cleaned up the mess in the laundry room (and cleaned up Liam) I made my last rounds around the house. It was starting to get late and I was almost off duty.
I gathered up all the trash around the house and placed the trash in to two large black bags. I grabbed the bags and made my way to the back door. It was starting to get dark outside so I tried to flip on the outside lights but they apparently weren’t working. I groaned and hauled the bags out to the garbage cans in the backyard.
As I got closer to the cans I noticed that one started to rattle. I stopped dead in my tracks and stared at it. It made a loud clanging noise and shook once more. I narrowed my eyes and slowly moved in closer. I quietly dropped the bags on the ground and stood right by the garbage can. I pulled the lid off and peaked my head over to look inside.
Suddenly, I heard a loud screech and a Possum leaped from the garbage can. I screamed and jumped back, falling on the ground.
“Holy shit!” I yelled taking a deep breath and put my hand over my heart. I stared in the direction that the possum had ran and stood back up.
I grabbed the garbage bags and threw them into the cans. I placed the lid back on and turned around quickly, coming face to face with Andy.
“AHHHHH!” I screamed.
“AHHHHH!” he screamed back at me, but in a lower voice octave.
“WHAT THE FUCK?!” I yelled and hit him in the shoulder. I placed a hand over my chest again and leaned over to try to catch my breath.
“Ow, Laney.” His yelled grabbing his shoulder.
“You scared the CRAP outta me, you bastard!” I yelled.
“Sorry.” He said laughing as he continued to rub his shoulder.
“That’s SO not funny.” I said. “I think I might have just had a heart attack.”
He continued to chuckle and stared down at my shirt. “I see you’re batting for ‘Team Andy’ eh?” he asked pointing at it.
I nodded. “Yeah - long story.” I said and started to walk back towards the house. “What are you doing here?” I asked
“Uh.. Band stuff. Basicly. But I’m a tad late.” He said nervously.
I looked at him. “What are you like breaking curfew or something?”
He smirked at me. “No I’m not breaking curfew.” He said mockingly. “I was just… out.”
I continued to stare at him with a skeptical face. “Ah, well thanks for clearing that up.”
He laughed and pulled the screen door open to the house. He held the door open for me and I stepped in.
“Thanks.” I mumbled to him as he entered the house and shut the door behind him. I glanced at the clock in the kitchen. “Well - I’m officially off duty. So - I guess I’ll see you…?”
“Tomorrow. Me and my brother Bradie are staying the night over here.” He said with a nod and headed up the stairs all too quickly.
“Ooookay.” I said and picked up my purse off of the chair in the hallway. I dug out my keys and walked out the door. I headed towards my car and hopped into ‘The Beast.’ I put the key in the ignition and attempted to start the car but it wouldn’t start. I grunted and tried to start my car again.
But nothing happened.
I sighed and hopped out of the car and walked back to the front door of the house. I knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer.
The door swung open and Andy stood there with a question look. “Did you forget something?”
I sighed. “No - the Beast isn’t functioning.”
Andy gave me a weird look. “Is that like a sexual term I should know?”
“What? No!” I said awkwardly. “Well I mean - it probably is… but I’m referring to my car. It won’t start.”
Andy let out a laugh and opened the door wider. I made my way inside just as Shaun walked down the stairs.
“Hey Laney, I thought you took off already.” He said curiously.
“I tried to, but my car won’t start.” I said and sighed again. “I’m just gonna borrow the phone so I can call my mum so she can come pick me up.”
“I can give you a ride home if you want.” He said quickly.
“Really?” I asked surprised.
“Yeah, sure. No problem. Let me just go grab my keys.” He said and turned to walk back up the steps.
I turned to look at Andy. “Sooo…” I said uncomfortably.
“Sooo…” he repeated. “See you tomorrow.” He said in a hurry and walked up the steps.
There was something definitely going on with that boy.
Shaun came marching back down the steps and smiled at me. “Ready?”
“Yep.” I said smiling back.
I followed him to his car and hopped in the passenger’s seat. He started the car and “This is The End” by the Maine filled my ears. I turned my head to look at him and smiled.
“What?” he asked with a smirk.
“Nothing.” I said still smiling. “This is just like, my favorite band ever.”
He smiled back at me as he continued to drive to my house.
